Ban Those Bird Units! - David Loertscher

Years back, the kids would stream into the library with their worksheets out on which they would copy facts about their favorite bird. No longer. The Internet has arrived and they prefer to cut, paste, and pass it in. The only change is the amount plagiarized. In today's accountable world, learners are supposed to think, deeply understand, read fluently, know, and be able to do. We throw a blizzard of information at them, but have learned that there is something more than hooking it up and plugging them in. In this three-hour workshop, 17 models for creating learning experiences with teachers in the information-rich and technology-rich environment will be presented and practiced. Each strategy sends a topical study beyond the death by PowerPoint phase into a giant high-think experience. The assessment of such collaborative experiences ends with the assessment of the success of each learner. The morning workshop will deal with the secondary curriculum and the afternoon session will cover elementary topics. Bring your best ideas for pushing into the center of the curriculum and making an impact on learning. We will share those and create many others together.

Audience:  All who are interested in making a difference in their schools
AM session is directed to Secondary level.
PM Session is directed to Elementary School level.
