Beach Books opened in November of 2005, the long-time dream of Karen Emmerling. A 1970 graduate of the University of Oregon Journalism School, Karen worked in advertising in Portland for seventeen years prior to returning to school and earning a second degree in English and a teaching certificate from Portland State University. After substituting for a short time, Karen joined her husband in his photography business and later continuted working with him as his interest turned to blacksmithing. In 1993, they moved their furniture and lighting business, Gearhart Ironworks, to the Oregon coast. Karen spent many hours volunteering in her children’s classrooms and when they went off to college, she followed her heart and opened the bookstore.

Beach Books is a general bookstore May 16, 2007 children’s literature. It is located just off Broadway in Seaside, one half block from the Convention Center.
